Well we think Brackets are similar to Boxers….they need to be STRONG, DURABLE, have good SWIVEL ACTION, EXCELLENT MANOEUVRABILITY and be able to take a PUNCH or a WEIGHT in this case scenario.

So, why are Stainless Steel brackets so fantastic?

Stainless steel brackets were something we were asked about a lot from our customers, and after much deliberation with the team, we decided to add it to our range.

People use stainless steel castors because they are less corrosive and can handle being cleaned often without ever rusting or compromising on their performance. This makes them perfect for food processing and the medical industry, however we also get a lot of enquiries from fabricators which are making applications that will be coming into contact with water, especially sea water, and we have already provided a range to be used on off shore oil rigs. Coupling a stainless steel bracket with an anti-static wheels gives you a very low spark risk which is important when there is a risk of fire.

In our range all of our wheels are available with a stainless steel castor, however we have only added the most popular and likely choices (as anything more would have become a bit difficult to navigate), so get in touch if you want a pairing you can’t find online.  On the website we have listed brackets with a stainless steel axel and plain bore, because again, these are more popular but we do o stainless steel roller bearings and ball bearings upon request.

Why use Pneumatics?

Pneumatic (air filled) tyres have long been a staple with trolley manufacturers and general fabricators alike. Their wide reaching applications and durability have meant they have become increasingly popular. Pneumatic wheels are great in all light duty applications, specifically good outdoors and over uneven ground.

Saying this, there has been an evolution to something known as Foam Filled Pneumatic Wheels. These wheels as the name suggests are filled with a special foam rather than air. The benefits of this development include the following:

  • Impossible to puncture meaning no loss of pressure
  • Removing the air means the wheels can be left stationary for long periods without loss of pressure
  • Flat spots are completely eradicated
  • They can be used in the harshest environments, like building sites which will have nails and sharp objects.
  • Capable of carrying heavier loads than their air filled equivalents
  • Offering cross country or ribbed treads
  • As there is no loss of pressure there will be no tyre cracking meaning the wheels last significantly longer.

Mechanical Handling Castors


We are often asked which of our castors are suitable for Mechanical handling applications. What tyre material is best for Mechanical Handling, Polyurethane? Rubber? Elastic Rubber? Also what speeds can the castors be safely towed? Will it affect the carrying capacity? Are the Brackets durable enough? Will I still be able to manually handle the trolley? Would you recommend Bolt Hole or Top Plate Fixing? What wheel centre material would you recommend?


So we have put together a quick Question and Answer Below to try and help clear this up:


What tyre material is best for mechanical handling? Elastic Rubber, which is found on our range of castors here and here you could also use a polyurethane tyre like this range here. We recommend the use of these tyres are they are durable and forgiving over uneven ground.


What is a safe towing Speed? Any mechanical handling is recommended at no more than 6km/h. However we can offer a special elastic polyurethane tyre which can accommodate speeds up to 16km/h. Please click here to enquire about this range.


Will the towing speed affect the carrying capacity? Towing speeds will have a detrimental effect on the loading capacities of your castor. Higher speeds mean increased vibrations and increased punishment on the brackets. Please call one of our specialists if you are planning on towing your castors and we can calculate the safe working load.


Are the Brackets Durable Enough? If you are towing at 6km/h you will have no problem with a standard bracket. However if speeds of 16km/h are likely we will offer a more durable bracket using a taper and thrust bearing with a much thicker gage of steel.


Will I still be able to use the trolley in manual handling applications? Absolutely, no problem at all. All our mechanical handling wheels will come complete with ball bearing centres meaning very low rolling resistance. We can also offer round profile tyres which improve manoeuvrability.


Should I use bolt hole or top plate fixing? We would always recommend a top plate fixing for mechanical handling as this is the most secure and robust way to attach any castor to your product.


What wheel centre is most suitable for mechanical handling? We would always recommend using an aluminium centre on the wheels used within your castor. Aluminium is Robust, reliable and performs well in outdoor environments.
